Fantastisk overset vin.

The Rivesaltes 1959 has a sensual bouquet with stewed fig, mint and espresso scents that open with aeration. It is well-defined with hints of melted chocolate developing. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plenty of fig and smoke notes at the beginning with fine delineation toward the long finish. One of the most extraordinary tastings recently has been of 19 Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturels from 2000 to 1933. These naturally sweet fortified wines from 16% to 17.5% abv, were unearthed by Montpellier based oenologue Philippe Gayral. They are still in cask, to be bottled under his brand L'Archiviste. In 1950, 60 million litres of Rivesaltes VDN were drunk in France; today just 1 million. Soon they will cease to exist. One or two bottles are a must for every cellar.

The 1950 is very different from the 1952 and is one of the standout wines from Philippe Gayral. It is more mature in color, more volatile but complex, with notes of Bovril, cooked meat, hazelnut and sloes. It is quite precocious, most likely because it was blended with 15% of another vintage at some point. The palate is sweet and intense on the entry with candied orange peel, Moroccan spice, sloes and a touch of eau-de-vie. It is very harmonious and intense, but showing great harmony towards the finish. Gorgeous! Tasted December 2012.

Score: 95 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (206), April 2013

A brick red colour with a little fade at the rim. Raisins and Christmas Cake on the nose with hints of molasses and treacle. The palate is sweet and rich like a Malamsey from Madeira and less spirity than an ancient Vintage Port. Lots of complexity and character. Intense, sweet and long right through to the finish but some balancing acidity too. This is a beautiful, rich, multi-layered wine with roast coffee bean, chocolate and sultana flavours. Only 16 degrees which means that you can go back for a second glass! If you were born in 1950 you have struck lucky here, if you weren't this is still an outstanding vinous treat that is highly recommended by all of us at Farr Vintners. Fabulous old wine and, for 60 years of age, quite stunning. The star of the show! As Oliver East pointed out at our tasting. It's only 66p per bottle per year of it's life! What a steal!

Probably consisting entirely of red Grenache and bottled last year, the 1945 Rivesaltes has a deep chestnut hue with a light tawny rim. It has an endearing nose with stewed oranges, camphor, woodbine and a touch of black currant, all well-defined considering its age. The palate has a medicinal entry with star anis, fennel, macerated dark cherries and dark plum. The 1948 Rivesaltes from Chateau Prieure du Monastir del Camp has more intensity on the nose compared to the 1948 with prune, fresh dates, camphor and quince - utterly glorious! The palate is very well balanced with superb weight.
