The 1950 is very different from the 1952 and is one of the standout wines from Philippe Gayral. It is more mature in color, more volatile but complex, with notes of Bovril, cooked meat, hazelnut and sloes. It is quite precocious, most likely because it was blended with 15% of another vintage at some point. The palate is sweet and intense on the entry with candied orange peel, Moroccan spice, sloes and a touch of eau-de-vie. It is very harmonious and intense, but showing great harmony towards the finish. Gorgeous! Tasted December 2012.

Score: 95 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (206), April 2013

A brick red colour with a little fade at the rim. Raisins and Christmas Cake on the nose with hints of molasses and treacle. The palate is sweet and rich like a Malamsey from Madeira and less spirity than an ancient Vintage Port. Lots of complexity and character. Intense, sweet and long right through to the finish but some balancing acidity too. This is a beautiful, rich, multi-layered wine with roast coffee bean, chocolate and sultana flavours. Only 16 degrees which means that you can go back for a second glass! If you were born in 1950 you have struck lucky here, if you weren't this is still an outstanding vinous treat that is highly recommended by all of us at Farr Vintners. Fabulous old wine and, for 60 years of age, quite stunning. The star of the show! As Oliver East pointed out at our tasting. It's only 66p per bottle per year of it's life! What a steal!

Score: 18.5 Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, March 2010

100% Grenache Noir. Lovely rich dark mahogany. Brick rim. Very lively and rich and complete. Fermented prune juice! Dry lively finish. Tangy. Great stuff. 16%

Score: 18.5 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, March 2013

Very dark, deep, foxy red. Very spicy and complex. Like molten fruit cake. Essence of figs. Great richness at first but it finishes dry. Really opulent and interesting. This was a sample taken straight from a massive foudre of this ancient wine

Score: 18 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, July 2009

Fine mahogany red, very fresh for 1950, wonderful vigour and warmth on the nose, rich and sweet on the palate with orange peel and natural flavours leading to a vigourous, dry finish.

Score: 18 Steven Spurrier, October 2014

Detaljer
